The Poor in Chennai City:
Roughly from 1950 to nearly 1970, the poor womenfolk in Chennai City had let their children to fend for themselves, keeping themselves busy doing work as household help to make a living. The men-folk were not of much help to the families as they would do some work and fritter away their income in drinking, giving some petty part of income earned to the household. Unfortunately, the drinking spree by men-folk of the poor community till this day continues unchanged. The children were not going to school but were playing in the streets and indulging in all things that are bad, including using abusive language.
But, today this situation has changed for the better. It is a pleasant and satisfying sight in the streets of Chennai City in the afternoon to see such poverty-stricken womenfolk of the children returning from schools taking their children home. It would appear that at least in the Chennai City, 100% of these poor children community, barring a few exceptions, is attending schools. There is growing awareness in the poor families about the importance of educating their children and with initiatives all around both by Government and NG Organizations, there is no dearth of schools and all the needy are admitted.
Education of children will certainly transform us into a formidable nation in time to come and make us second to none in the world, in all spheres of life.
